Outreach and Mission

For our entire history, Watchung Avenue has been engaged in outreach and mission to our local community and beyond out into the world. Outside of worship, mission is one of the most important aspects of our life together as a community that follows Jesus-it is our highest calling as disciples.
We are currently supporting the following local mission projects:
- Summer organic garden project with the Catholic Community of St. Joseph in North Plainfield to feed the hungry in our community fresh, local veggies all summer. For more info on the garden read our blog post and see our nearly end-of-harvest report for 2011. Photos on the mainpage of our website!
- Monthly feeding program for homeless Plainfield residents at the Plainfield YMCA
- Christmas Giving Tree Program
- FISH Food Bank
- Elizabethport Center
- El Centro Hispanomerica (supporting new local immigrants)
- Camp Johnsonburg
- Red Ribbon Fellowship AIDS Ministry
- RESTORE Ministries
- Plainfield Habitat for Humanity
We are currently supporting the following national and international mission projects:
- We are the yearly host site for the Plainfield/North Plainfield CROP Walk with Church World Service, raising thousands of dollars yearly for our community and world. Want to sign up to walk this year, October 23, 2011? Here's how!
- Supporting Blanket Sunday with Church World Service every year, as one of CWS’s highest grossing congregations
- Supporting One Great Hour of Sharing Offering yearly that supports Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Self-Development of People, and the Presbyterian Hunger Program
- Our church school children take an offering every week half of which is designated yearly to a mission project of their choice
- Our Youth Group leads the Souper Bowl of Caring Offering each year on Super Bowl Sunday
- Mission Trips for Adults and Youth
- PC(USA) Mission Co-Workers in Colombia, South America: Rev. Mamie Broadhurst and Rev. Richard Williams
We do not just support these projects with our dollars-but with our work. WAPC
members are highly involved in our local community, and leaders in many of these mission projects. We are always open to starting something new, or serving when new or emergency needs arise in our community or around the world. Mission is one of the most exciting parts of membership at WAPC-allowing you the opportunity for engagement in mission to all in God’s World as we build the beloved community together!
