"Books for Jamaica builds partnerships for development, through the transfer of intellectual and technological resources."
Books for Jamaica is a solidarity project that ships books, computers and other resources to community organizations, schools, libraries and other institutions that serve rural and urban Jamaicans. We have established partnerships that directly serve the people of Jamaica.
Books for Jamaica organizes various community events focusing on Jamaican culture, human rights and social-economic needs. Recently, our Jamaican Film Festival featured a Bob Marley documentary film, a Marcus Garvey documentary film and the rare film "Lion of Judah" (Haile Selassie's 1966 official visit to Jamaica). Invited speakers and delegations from Jamaica are a part of our programming goal. Community awareness and participation is an important part of building solidarity with Jamaica.
Books for Jamaica is a growing solidarity organization. Although most of our material aid shipments of books, computers and office supplies are donated, there are other expenses that require funding. Shipping for six computers, monitors and supplies to Kingston can cost up to $300. Book shipments weighing 400 lbs cost approximately $250. Items that are not donated must be purchased, such as inkjet printers ($30-$50 per printer plus spare ink cartridges).
Your financial help is needed to complete our partner projects. Contributions to Books for Jamaica are deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.
