Lending a Blessed Hand
The Prayer Shawl Ministry
At Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church, we offer congregants of all ages a chance to give back by joining our wide range of ministries. Our Faith Affirmations allows current members or newcomers to be involved with our ongoing mission of spreading the teachings of Jesus Christ to our ever-growing community. Giving back is ingrained into our philosophy and it’s at the root of our very being.
Learning To Give Back
Hearts, Hands and stitches
The ministry began in October, 2009. We meet monthly, on the second Tuesday of each month except December. A portion of each meeting is spent stitching without speaking, while listening to sacred music, so that we may pray blessings into the shawls. Attendance at meetings is not required to participate in this ministry. Prayer shawls have been created for those who are ill, grieving a loss, or homebound, as well as for joyous occasions, such as a new baby. Please contact Gwyn Gronlund at 908-754-1251 for more information.
A Wide Range of Initiatives
One Great Hour of Sharing
A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed.
Providing for the Needy
The Faith Garden is growing again. Lettuce & spinach planted in the spring are ready for harvest by the beginning of summer. Tomato & pepper plants are also planted at this time. We plan to plant seeds for cucumbers, squash, beans, chard & kale. Regular watering is always needed, so volunteers are more than welcome! Join in the fun! Sign up on our work schedule sign- up sheet to help with weeding, watering & harvesting. The produce of the Faith Garden is given to those in need, through the WIC program, St. Vincent de Paul, & SHIP.
Shaping Your Faith
For over 100 Years, Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church has provided the community with all the tools, wisdom, and resources they need to keep them grounded. Each of our ministries is as strong as a family and bring congregants closer together.
Providing for Children in Need
To provide bags of non-perishable food every Friday to be distributed by the school nurse to the 25 most-in-need students identified by the Middle and High school systems. It is our goal to provide nutritious foods and to provide foods that students will eat. We are committed to provide the bags of food weekly until end of the school year.
